5 Signs It's Time to Upgrade Your Stairs
1. Creaky Steps
While this may seem like more of a nuisance than anything, quite often noisy steps can be an indication of underlying maintenance issues. As wood ages and natural ware and tear occurs, steps become warped. Typically the squeak comes from the point where the nail or screw is placed; however, this can be pinpointed by a professional contractor who can then offer up suggestions on the best course of action to repair the issue. Repairs can be as simple as using glue, replacing screws, or even adding blocks to further support the step, but this would of course be dependent on the staircase design.
2. Loose or Cracked Treads
The tread, or more commonly referred to by most as the "step", is the long plank of wood one steps on when using the stairs. As time passes, these treads can crack or become loose, pulling away from the fasteners, creating not only an uncomfortable experience, but also a hazardous situation. Having a professional contractor inspect the staircase will allow for them to evaluate the problem and provide the best fix for the problem, which could range from resecuring a loose screw or nail, to replacing the affected tread.
3. Soft Staircase
You step down and can immediately feel that something is off. Maybe you can't pinpoint what it is, but something about the staircase feels "soft" and not the warm and fuzzy carpet kind of soft. Understanding that the treads are only one component of a staircase is important, but often can be an indication of a much more serious structural issue. Having a qualified profession inspect this issue immediately is critical to help rule out any serious safety hazards and ensure repair solutions are provided promptly.
4. Water Damage
Excessive water on wood can cause it to warp and rot over time, resulting in a comprised staircase and unsafe situation. This is most common to outdoor decks, porches, and basement stairs due to increased moisture and the elements of the environment. Discussing proper maintenance and scheduling a repair with a skilled professional is important to address a compromised staircase and prevent future expenses.
5. Poorly Placed Banister
Depending on the age or design of your staircase, quite often the handrails or banisters are too short or missing altogether, resulting in an extremely unsafe staircase posing fall risks for you and your loved ones. This can be both a practical and aesthetic upgrade, providing you with both peace of mind and a quick facelift to the look of your staircase.
