5 Steps to Giving Your Staircase a Much Needed Facelift
1. Remove any carpet or other covering from the stairs, ensuring removal of any leftover nails or staples from the carpeting as well.
2. Sand the stairs to remove any rough spots, scratches, or dents. Start with a coarse grit sandpaper and gradually work your way up to a finer grit sandpaper.
3. Fill any gaps or holes in the stairs with wood filler, and then sand again to make the surface smooth.
4. Stain the stairs with a wood stain of your choice. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions for application and drying time.
5 . Once the stain is dry, apply a clear coat or sealer to protect the wood and give it a polished look.
PRO TIP
Step up your stairs game (pun totally intended) by installing new stair treads and risers, balusters, or railings.
